Yu
- History/Myth ~ ANCIENT CHINA (Taoism) ~ Also called: "Yu the Great," Da-yu (Ta-yü), "Master of the Way." He sometimes portrayed as half-man, half-dragon, but later portrayed as all human. He was said to be the son of the Sky God, Gun. Gun created the flood that Yu is credited with stopping. He is the hero of the flood. For 13 years he worked to lead the floodwaters (the Yellow River) to the sea by creating rivers, cutting holes through the mountains, and creating springs. He often worked in the form of a bear. One of Yu’s symbols is a double snake. Yu was also the mythical first emperor of the Xia Dynasty (est. reign 2205 - 2197 BC). He is the father of Qi ("The Opener"). As the "Jade Emperor," he was called: Yu-huang, Yü-huang, Yu-di, or Shang-di. He became one of the most important deities. He started out as Yuan-shi tian-zong’s (Celestial Venerable of the Primordial Beginning) assistant. When Yuan-shi tian-zong retired, Yu became the main deity. Yu started out as the son of a mortal king and was a mortal himself. When his father died, Yu became king, but abdicated a few days later. He went to the mountains to study Taoism. He then spent the rest of his life helping the sick and the poor and teaching them about Taoism. "After 3,200 world periods he became a golden immortal and after a further hundred million eons, the Jade Emperor (qtd. Encyclopedia Mythica: Yu)." He determines all that happens in Heaven, Earth, and "the lower regions;" promotes subordinate deities; controls the ministries of natural phenomena and aspects of human existence; and the creation of the bodies of men from clay. His palace is situated in the highest Taoist heaven (Da-luo-tian). Er-lang is his nephew and Chi Gu-niang is one of his daughters.
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ A Goa’uld System Lord, he was once thought to have ruled on Earth, although, he never portrayed himself as a God. According to Daniel, he might have been one of the earliest Emperors of China, and the "Ancient Scrolls" say he possibly founded the first recorded dynasty whose advancements came under harsh rule. According to legend, he has grand powers, and sprang to life from a dragon’s body. Nirty, Cronus, and he negotiated the treaty with the SGC (303 – Fair Game). Daniel impersonates Yu’s slave, Jarrin, with the help of the Reol’s neurotoxin (He was chosen by the Tok-ra because he can speak fluent Goa’uld). Daniel is sent in to take out all of the system lords at once, effectively eradicating the Goa’uld threat and creating a power vacuum. We learn that Yu’s full name is “The Jade Emperor, Yu-Huang-Shang-Ti” also known as “Yu the Great.” Along with Baal, Bastet, Kali, Morrígan, Olokun, and Svarog, Yu is one of the seven System Lords meeting at the neutral zone of the Hassara System. Yu also suspects that Olokun is plotting to murder him because he recently defeated Olokun’s forces (515 – Summit). He is the only one to vote against the reinstatement of Anubis. Osiris reveals that Yu tried to murder Anubis after he had been exiled. Baal’s lo’taur (human slave) tells Yu that he believes that Daniel cannot be trusted which leads Yu to go to the cargo ship. When Yu arrives on the cargo ship, he inadvertently releases Osiris, who stabbed him while fighting; fate unknown (516 – Last Stand). He recovered from Osiris’ stab wound with the help of a sarcophagus and tells Teal’c that he knows the location of the Rebel Jaffa base and is sending a mother ship there to destroy it. He also tells Teal’c the truth about Kytano and lets him go in a gesture of good faith (518 – The Warrior). He destroyed Baal’s secret outpost from the comfort of his mothership orbiting the planet (606 – Abyss). He now controls the collective forces of the System Lords. He brings the fleet to orbit around Abydos in order to try to capture the Eye of Ra, and to stop Anubis. Unfortunately, once Anubis has all six of the Eyes, he destroys the fleet. Yu is most likely dead (622 – Full Circle). We thought he was dead, but in true false-god fashion, he escaped in a pod right before the explosion. However, it is revealed that he can no longer take new hosts, and is becoming senile. Oshu, his First Prime, has been running the show (701/702 – Fallen/Homecoming). He knows about the Ancients’ weapon that was used to destroy Anubis, however he lets Oshu do most of the talking (801/802 – New Order). He and Amaterasu are rallying troops in a last ditch effort against Baal in the War of the System Lords (813 – It’s Good To Be King). Stabbed and presumably killed by the RepliCarter (816/817 – Reckoning).
